Chromium Edge Insider builds

Microsoft  gradually started to release Insider builds from Chromium Edge. The tech giant wants to push more and more users to adopt its new browser.

The latest Insider builds for Microsoft Edge bring a new feature to the table. You can now see media information by looking at the top left volume pane. This feature is a very interesting one as it brings details that were not previously available.

The new feature works perfectly well with YouTube Music and YouTube. You can see the name of the song at the top, followed by the video icons and artists details on the second line.

These details are specifically useful for those who love to stream music on YouTube. Apart from YouTube, this feature also supports many other popular websites such as Netflix.

How to disable YouTube video info overlay?

Chromium Edge shows Media Info

Apparently, some gamers are not at all happy about it. They said the new feature affects the gaming experience in a negative way. One Redditor suggested using this quick workaround to disable the feature.

Go to chrome://flags, find “Hardware Media Key Handling” and disable it (you can ctrl+f to search for it). That worked for me.

While others came up with their own suggestions to extend its functionality.

No there’s not a way to choose what it controls, I’m pretty sure it just controls the last focused app. Although that would be a good idea! Maybe like a list of all the apps and tabs that are playing media and you can select which one you want to control or set some kind of priority order?

This feature is currently available in Edge Dev version 79.0.182.6. Both Google and Microsoft Engineers have worked together to implement it.

At the time of writing this article, this feature is limited to Chrome Canary. The respective Channels are Beta Channel: 76.0.182.9, Dev Channel: 77.0.189.3 and Canary Channel: 77.0.196.0.

If the development process continues at this pace, it will be available to the general public very soon.

There are still many other websites that need to implement this functionality to take advantage of the new feature.
